WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR READING?  READ MORE BOOKS!

Want to learn where your child's reading level is at?  NWEA reading tests will report the current Lexile or reading level ability.  Look for the Lexile statement on your child's report.  This number generally has a range of ability meaning that your child may be able to read and comprehend books within that range level.  To help students find good fit books that will challenge and not frustrate, we use AR color coding in our school library.  In my classroom library, I have given them the Lexile number so that they can start transitioning to a middle school/high school/public library system which is not color coded.  They can look at their book level at the sites below , or they can use the good fit book priniciple as pictured below.  If your child is reading above grade level, especially in the Lexile measures 1000+, it is okay to mix it up with books at the lower levels.  Remember your child is, after all, in fifth grade, and adult level reading is not typically interesting to students at this age.
